Per-Graft Pricing: Why it Benefits the Seller, not the Buyer

Most hair transplant offices structure their fees on a "per graft" basis, quoting potential clients anywhere between $2 to as much as $7 per graft. So as not to scare people away with large dollar numbers, sales reps typically quote prices in a range of grafts—i.e. “we can transplant anywhere between 400 and 2400 grafts at x-dollar per graft”—and let the client’s budget make the decision for them. The goal of this type of pricing is to sell to everyone regardless of their budget.

But here at Samson we feel per-graft pricing is not in the best interest of the consumer. Here’s why:

• Clarity: In most cases, the client is not qualified to make a decision on how many grafts he or she needs; most have no idea what 1,000 grafts look like. • Wrong Incentives: selling hair by the graft naturally provides a financial incentive to exaggerate the number of grafts the patient needs. The client might need just 1,500 grafts but the doctor would make twice as much if he convinces the client to buy 3,000.
  
  And it can lead to “graft splitting”: the unscrupulous practice of splitting natural-occurring 3- or 4-hair grafts into smaller units just before they are planted back on the client’s head. Natural hair grafts should not be split because splitting shocks and kills some of the hair. So the client ends up paying more for less hair; actually paying for having dying hair planted on his or her head.
  
  Finally, per-graft pricing motivates some practitioners to resort to “up-selling”, the practice of extracting more hair than the client asked for and then offering to plant the extra hair at a discount rate. “We happened to end up with some extra hair here. It’s already cut, so we’ll just give it to you and split the cost,” the line goes.
  
  
• Tension Over Numbers: Per-graft selling can get some clients to start counting and needlessly worry them about whether they are getting all the grafts they paid for.
